Register for the 2010 Master Naturalist Program

Zabulon Skipper on Pickerel Weed at Dove's LandingThe Merrimac Farm Chapter of Virginia's Master Naturalist Program will offer a course from May 27 through October 3. There are both lecture and field classes, with an emphasis on being outside.

The program fee is $200 per participant, payable when you submit your application. You must be 18 years old by the start of the training session to participate.

Applications are due by May 14 for the 2010 session. Class size is limited to 15 participants.

To become a Certified Master Naturalist, a trainee must:

  1. Complete the basic training course;
  2. Pass a take-home test at the end of the training course;
  3. Complete at least 8 hours of advanced training, approved by the Merrimac Farm Chapter;
  4. Volunteer for at least 40 hours for a project approved by the Merrimac Farm Chapter.

Most classes are held at Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area.

Everyone has 12 months from the last day of basic training to complete the advanced training and volunteer requirements for certification.

Master Naturalist Certification is valid through the calendar year following the year in which the requirements were completed. To maintain certification, volunteers complete an additional 8 hours of advanced training and 40 hours of service annually.

Participants are expected to cover all the material of the course. No more than two classes may be missed. All missed sessions must be made up by attending the appropriate, approved class within 12 months of the completion of the training.
