Prince William County Park Authority

Park Authority Master Planning Public Meetings for Silver Lake & the Wiita Property

  • Wiita Property - This approximate 70-acre property, located just south of Lake Manassas between Glenkirk Road and Vint Hill Road adjacent to the western border of Rollins Ford Road, was proffered to Prince William County citizens for Parks & Recreation as part of the Wellington Glen rezoning in 2006. The proffers say the property is intended for Parks & Recreation uses and include no restrictions on recreation uses. The Park Authority has initiated the Master Planning process to develop a development plan and is seeking community input on preferred recreation uses for this new park.

    PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULE:

    • Wednesday, September 16, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., at the PWC Park Authority Headquarters, George Hellwig Memorial Park, 14420 Bristow Road, Manassas

    • Tuesday, September 29, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., at the PWC Park Authority Headquarters, George Hellwig Memorial Park, 14420 Bristow Road, Manassas

    RESOURCES

  • Silver Lake - This 233-acre property, located on Antioch Road west of the Town of Haymarket, was proffered to Prince William County citizens for Parks & Recreation as part of the rezoning approval for 400 additional homes at Dominion Valley. The proffers say the property is intended for Parks & Recreation uses and include no restrictions on recreation uses. Silver Lake was transferred to the Park Authority June 23.

Supervisors May and Nohe's attempted to include deed restrictions that would have limited uses to passive recreation and horseback riding, which matched the Park Authority's previous commitments at Silver Lake. However, the majority of Supervisors did not agree and the property was transferred without restrictions.

The Park Authority has said that all recreation uses will be considered in the Master Planning process, raising concerns that passive recreation uses could be displaced by intensive recreation uses aimed at generating revenue.

Park Authority Strategic Plan Update

PWCPA 2008 Needs Assessment
According to the 2008 PWCPA Needs Assessment, in all seven voting districts, purchasing land to preserve open and green space for future generations received the most 1st choices from respondents.

May 2009 -- County officials are gathering public input now for revisions to the Park Authority's Strategic Plan. At the public meeting on May 18 2009, about a dozen people highlighted the need for the PWCPA to create network of trails, establish more neighborhood parks close to where people live, and take action on protecting green open space before it’s all developed. This feedback to the Park Authority matched the findings of the Park Authority's 2008 Needs Assessment, which verified that people are willing to invest in the future. Keep reading...

Recommendations:

  • Inventory current park land holdings to identify rare, sensitive and high quality natural and cultural resources, as required in the County's Comprehensive Plan Parks and Open Space Chapter and the PWCPA current Strategic Plan.
  • Collaborate with others to increase active and passive recreation opportunities.
  • Prioritize efforts to address unmet park and recreation needs, including land acquisition.
  • Prioritize efforts to ensure park and recreation opportunities in areas close to the population they will serve.
