Potomac Mills mall may be Woodbridge's main claim to fame, but the area is destined to attract visitors to another local landmark in future years: Belmont Bay.

This planned community, designed in the style of an American harbor town, already boasts a championship golf course and 158-slip marina on an attractive location at the confluence of the Potomac and Occoquan Rivers. It is expected to become a tourist destination along the lines of nearby Occoquan or even Old Town Alexandria.

Restaurants and shops are planned for the marina area, where visitors will be able to stroll while admiring the boats and to sip cocktails while gazing at the sparkling river water. Plans also call for office space, restaurants, shops and a 240-room hotel and conference center. Model homes are open.

The Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge for fish and birds, adjacent to the development, will be of interest to scientists as well as tourists. A Virginia Railway Express station is located in Woodbridge next to Belmont Bay, and high-speed water-taxi service has been proposed to link the area to the Georgetown waterfront. An outdoor pavilion for summer concerts is also planned.

The Belmont Bay Life Science Center is expected to open as part of the development in June 2005 and to attract 550,000 to 750,000 visitors annually. Groundbreaking will take place in January 2003 for this branch of the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond, which will focus on biological science and will include an Imax theater and interactive exhibits that will take advantage of the museum's site adjacent to the wildlife refuge.

At Riverwalk at Belmont Bay, American Homes, Stanley Martin Cos., Miller and Smith and Drees Homes are building luxury town houses priced from the $180,000's to the $260,000's and single-family homes priced from the mid $300,000's.

According to Prince William County's Department of Economic Development, about 30 percent of the county's jobs are in the retail sector, primarily because of the impact of Potomac Mills and nearby stores, which attract shoppers from round the region High tech companies and defense contractors make up the majority of other employers around the Woodbridge area, in part because of the proximity of the Quantico Marine Corps Base.

Major employers in the Woodbridge area include Prochain Solutions, a software company; Sverdrup, a Swedish company working on a Defense Department contract; Mitre Corp., a defense contractor; Potomac Hospital; General Dynamics Land Systems; Universal Dynamics; Woodbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; Comcast Communications; Coleman American Moving Systems; Arban & Carosi Inc., a manufacturing firm and GDC Inc., a transportation and communications company.
