Board of Supervisors Public Hearing
Tuesday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m.
Our Sept. 14 community meeting provides an opportunity for citizens to share information, learn more about the proposed changes and discuss community goals for open space preservation in Prince William County.

Definitions provide the framework for planning efforts and a starting point for this community discussion. The proposed open space plan, which includes an assessment of existing "open space," is based on governments finding that "forty percent (40%) of the land in Prince William County is protected by some form of park or open space." Also of interest is the proposed green corridors map, which is intended to guide future trails efforts but omits the mid-county area. Do you know where candidates stand on important issues? Meet Board of Supervisors candidates Corey Stewart (R) and Sharon Pandak (D) and learn more about their views and goals!

On August 3, 2006, the U.S. Senate confirmed Board of Supervisors Chairman Sean Connaughton's appointment as the Maritime Administrator for the U.S. Dept. of Transportation. Mr. Connaughton's expected resignation from the Board of Supervisors would initiate a special election for the Chairman's seat.

Election officials also would need to know the names of the candidates by Sept. 8 in order to have them printed in time to send out absentee ballots. But a judge would have until Sept. 23 -- which is 45 days before the general election -- to order an election that could be held Nov. 7. [Washington Post, August 13, 2006] Resignation after Sept. 8 and before Sept. 23 would cause significant logistical problems that could challenge the viability of a Nov. 7 election and move the date into 2007.

The politicat parties have nominated their candidates already: Corey Stewart (R) and Sharon Pandak (D). Independent candidates will have a once the electoral board has received an order from the circuit court, authorizing the special election. Extenuating circumstances, such a challenge to the legality of the party conventions or legal challenges to the electoral board calendar for independent candidates, could also move a special election into 2007.

Due to the complicated process and the important issues at stake, it should be an intriguing election season. In addition, the shortness of the campaign calendar for the special election could allow more potential than usual for candidates to avoid taking clear positions on issues.

Informed citizens are better equipped to make wise choices. Citizen participation in these and other candidate forums is critical to making sure candidate views and goals are well known before residents are asked to choose a new Chairman. You can't win if you don't play. Election outcomes are determined by those who participate.

Elizabeth Hartwell's actions to preserve the Mason Neck peninsula for bald eagles also helped preserve an important natural area along the Potomac River in Prince William County. Now known as the Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge, this site is home to a variety of wildlife and provides fertile hunting grounds for the bald eagles nesting at Mason Neck.

The Featherstone Refuge is located at the point where Neabsco Creek flows into the Potomac River. With 325 acres of bottomland forests and freshwater tidal marshes, the Refuge attracts waterfowl, wading birds and migratory songbirds. Bald eagles and other raptors perch along the Potomac River shoreline. This is a great spot to watch wildlife!

The Featherstone Refuge is generally closed to public uses and many people do not even know it exists. Now is you chance to visit this fabulous natural area along Prince William's Potomac River shoreline!

Join Prince William Conservation Alliance naturalists on Saturday, July 8 for a guided tour of the Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge. We will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the main Rippon VRE parking lot, located at the intersection of Rippon Blvd. and Farm Creek Drive, east of Route 1.

Preferred attire includes sturdy hiking shoes, long socks, long pants, hat and light colors. Bring water to drink, binoculars and cameras. We have some binoculars to share.
